Bhola Macher Jhal/Atlantic Croaker in Spicy Mustard Gravy

I recently made this Atlantic croakier(also known as Bhola Mach in Bengali) cooked in a spicy mustard gravy with onion and garlic. This is a truly delectable Bengali fish curry served with steamed rice.

There are many species of croaker. This Atlantic croaker is native to western Atlantic ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. My Ma made this fabulous fish curry so many times while growing up. This was very common fish in my home town. I got these very fresh and cleaned from the Asian Market. It's better to cook right away.

Ingredients~
5-6 pieces fish about 2 lb.
3/4 tsp salt or to taste
1/2 tsp turmeric
4 tbsp mustard paste
1 medium tomato,cut into wedges
2 tbsp minced onion
1/8 tsp garlic paste
4-5 green chilies, slightly slit
4 tbsp oil
1 1/2 cups of hot water
A hand full of cilantro

Method~
Smear fish pieces with little salt and turmeric. Heat oil in a large wok over medium high heat. Fry fish pieces both sides until golden brown. Set aside. Reduce heat to low. In the same oil saute minced onion and garlic paste for a few minutes. Add in mustard paste and 1/4 cup hot water. Keep stirring so mixture doesn't stick to the bottom. Pour hot water and bring to boil. Add in remaining turmeric and salt. Drop fish pieces and lit chilies. Cover and simmer for 8-10 minutes over low heat. Taste and adjust seasonings. Garnish with cilantro. Let it cool for a while. Serve with teamed rice. Enjoy!!

Happy Cooking!!
