Sardine Bhorta/Mashed Sardine

Bhorta is an amazing dish from Bangladesh, can be made in many different ways with veggies, lentils and non veg proteins. This Sardine Bhorta/Mashed Sardine is the easiest one I have ever learned from my dear Bangladeshi friend and eaten with piping hot steamed rice. When sudden craving for mach bhorta/mashed fish happens, this Sardine Bhorta/Mashed Sardine comes to the rescue! This is another delicious on the go sardine recipe from my kitchen.

I always have canned sardine on hand. This not really fancy but one of my favorite comfort meals for lunch or dinner along with some simple veggie dishes and lentil. This meal looks so colorful and makes me want to eat more. Canned fish makes cooking so easy with less cleaning. This recipe takes less than 30 minutes with just a few pantry ingredients. Like Sardine Chachchari, I use sardine in oil, cook with some drained oil from the can along with lots of fresh chilies, julienned ginger and garlic to remove the strong fishy flavor. Check this Sardine Chachchari as well.

Ingredients~
(US customary units)
4 cans of sardine in oil, drained and save the oil
3/4 cup red onion, cut into julienne
2 tbsp julienned garlic
2 tbsp julienned ginger
4-6 fresh hot Thai chilies, slightly slit plus 2 chilies thinly sliced or as per taste
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/3 tsp salt or to taste
1/3 tsp turmeric powder
3 tbsp oil from the can
A few sprigs of coriander leaves and some chopped coriander leaves

Method~
Heat oil in a large wide pan over medium high heat. Fry onion, ginger and garlic together until medium brown. Then add in salt, turmeric and sliced chilies. Stir in the lemon juice, slit chilies, chopped coriander leaves and drained sardines and gently break them them up to mix with spices and stir fry for 3-4 minutes until everything well combined. Taste and adjust seasonings. Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve with plain rice. Enjoy this quick mach bhorta/mashed fish that is made out of can in less than 30 minutes. Simply delicious!

Happy Cooking!
