Lentil fritters and Lentil Curry with plain steamed rice is a soulful combo in Bengali households. They are so tasty and they only require minimum pantry ingredients, yet full of crispy-crunchy deliciousness. There are lots of variations but these two types of fritters are very popular for most Bengali households. They can be served as starter with tea and puffed rice too.
Ingredients~
For the Red Lentil Fritters:
1 cup red lentil,washed and soaked for at least for 2 hours
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped cilantro/coriander leaves
2-3 chopped hot green chilies or as per heat tolerance
1/2 tsp salt or to taste
1/8 tsp turmeric
1/2 cup oil

Method~
Wash lentils and soak in 2 cups of water at room temperature for 2 hours and or soak in hot water for at least 1 hour if you are in a hurry. Drain lentils and transfer to a blender. Grind with minimum water with chilies. Scrape down the sides in between. Heat oil in a pan on medium high heat. Transfer lentil paste to a medium bowl and add onion, cilantro, turmeric, chili and salt. Mix well to combine.
Take about a tablespoon or less amount of the batter in hand and press with your thumb to flatten. Gently drop in hot oil. Allow them to cook for at least 2-3 minutes per sides before flipping. Fry both sides till golden brown. Remove and drain on a paper towel. Serve hot with rice and lentil or with puffed rice and hot tea.

For the Chic Pea-Split Peas Fritters:
1/2 cup Bengal gram/husked black chick peas
1/2 cup yellow split peas
1/4 cup desiccated unsweetened coconut or 1/2 cup freshly grated coconut
2-3 green chilies or as per taste
1/8 tsp nigella seeds
Handful of cilantro/coriander leaves(optional)
1/8 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp salt or to taste
1/2 cup oil
Method~
Wash and soak the lentils with some water for at least 2 hours. Drain water and grind in the blender with minimum water with chilies. Heat oil in a pan on medium high heat. Mix lentil paste well with salt, turmeric and cilantro. Take some batter in hand and gently drop in hot oil. Make big or small sized fritters as per choice. Allow them to cook for at least 2-3 minutes per sides before flipping. Fry both sides till golden brown. Remove and drain on a paper towel. Serve hot with rice and lentil or with puffed rice and hot tea.
